How Siemens Mobility engaged their audience at InnoTrans2018
Back in the summer we were excited to work with Siemens Mobility to contribute to their exhibit stand at InnoTrans 2018, the largest rail event in the world. As big players in the rail industry, Siemens Mobility were representing their latest technology at the event, ranging from latest rolling stock to digital safety products and services. Siemens Mobility is constantly innovating its portfolio in its core areas of rolling stock, rail automation and electrification, turnkey systems, intelligent traffic systems as well as related services.

It was a pleasure to work with Siemens Mobility, they really understood the power of engaging attendees through an interactive experience which had a serious message. For their latest on board technology, Nexus, they asked us to create 2 games to communicate what the technology did. For both games the attendee had to drive a train using dashboard controls then carry out the actions the Nexus software would be doing. The 2 applications were C-DAS (Connected-Driver Advisory system) and RCM (Remote Condition Monitoring).
Remote Condition Monitoring
RCM mode, as well as controlling the speed of the train, the player needed to detect the faults on the track using visual and audio cues. At the end of the game the results were compared with the accuracy of the RCM technology. The key points were hit home about comparing traditional labour intensive techniques with the modern on board technology.
Connected-Driver Advisory system
The primary focus in this experience is for the player to control the speed of the train inline with the commands from the C-DAS technology. By monitoring your speed and changing it accordingly, the more accurately you responded, the more eco stars won for saving energy. The fun challenge here was to pay attention to C-DAS commands and pushing a lever controlling the speed in the game, but the important message explained the energy savings and punctuation improvements by concentrating on speed.
For us, not only was this a fun project to work on, it is a great example of how games can be a great way to draw people to your event stand and deliver a powerful message. The engaging interaction gives the user a personal experience that stays with them long after the event. When the exhibit has a competitive edge, it encourages others to do better than the last person, and of course people come back to improve on their previous attempt. Adding a light hearted angle allows for easier conversations around the messages being communicated at the exhibit stand.
